Volunteers – Without You, where would we be?

The Blue Deer Center would not be what it is today without the hundreds and thousands of hours of volunteer support that have been poured into it since the original inception. Just in the past few years, volunteer time has served to account for an additional 4 full time staff people here at the Center. It is just this kind of dedication and support of their hearts and hands that helps the staff, participants and providers to continue their important work. This giving builds a home for people to align with their hearts and with nature.

Our volunteers are people who give of their hearts, through their hands. They support the BDC for a variety of reasons – because they have received healing here, because they recognize and align with the mission of the Center, because they are seeking community, because they want to contribute their knowledge and skills to supporting a larger entity, because they enjoy learning and being with other individuals with similar hearts and curiosities, because they want to connect with the Land and the River, because they may not have money for a program but can take a week off to be here as a volunteer. There are boundless reasons as to why individuals choose to volunteer at the Center, and the origin of it all, is a calling from their heart to be of service to others.

Connection is a key part of the volunteer experience – connection with the Land and River, connection with other individuals, connection with the Fire, and with their own hearts. It is not unusual for volunteers to experience emotional upwelling while here on the Land. This is part of what makes being a volunteer for the BDC unique – it holds a spiritual component that brings them deeper. Deeper into themselves than if they were just ‘doing’. It can be a healing, an opening, and a bridge to selfless service and to their own personal journeys.

It is important to show our heartfelt gratitude and excitement for the time on the Land that these wonderful volunteers have given to the center and to each and every one of us here at the Blue Deer Center.

Thank you for your service!  and for your love of this place, The Blue Deer Center.

There are many volunteer opportunities at the Blue Deer Center. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please contact Aaron Bauman @ 845-586-3225 or ABauman@bluedeer.org

Wecome to Aaron Bauman! New Program Manager at Blue Deer Center

A Great Big Welcome to Aaron Bauman, Our New Program Manager!
Look for Aaron the next time you are at the Blue Deer Center and say hello! A Few words from Aaron.....

I first came to the Blue Deer Center in July of 2010; I had read Plant Spirit Medicine around the time of its initial release, and after many experiences and a lot of growing, life finally brought me to this sacred land.  The Healing Camp I attended changed my life, though that is a simple statement for a many-faceted, sometimes scary, sublime and ongoing deepening.  It's fair to say that I finally got a taste of what I have been searching for my entire life.  Now, I have the opportunity to serve you, this land, and the medicine that flows through this land and the traditions that are housed here.  I do so with deep gratitude.

I've worn many hats thus far: auto mechanic, software engineer, farmer, millworker, just to name a few.  Most recently, I was part owner of a successful small business.  I'm no stranger to cutting firewood or getting the computer to work!  I am also (finally) studying Plant Spirit Medicine, and love to cook and bake (and eat!), and spend time outdoors with the trees, mountains, rivers . . . well, all of it, whenever possible.  When I have the time, I really enjoy working with my hands, shaping wood or stone or metal.  In the end, I've finally learned that in the absence of community, all of these things only get me partly connected to my Heart.  It comes back to relationships.  With that in mind, I look forward to seeing you at the Center.

Warmly,
Aaron

PLANT SPIRIT MEDICINE Author and Traditional Healer, Eliot Cowan, takes us on a journey into THE HEALING WISDOM OF PLANTS

(Boulder, December 1, 2013) Since 1995, copies of Eliot Cowan’s small-press phenomenon Plant Spirit Medicine have passed hand-to-hand among those intrigued by shamanism, herbal medicine, and all things alive and green. Now, this much-anticipated updated edition invites us to discover the spiritual power of plants—not their physical medicinal properties, but the deeper wisdom and gifts they offer.
Enriched by the author’s many explorations since its first edition, this new edition, Plant Spirit Medicine: A Journey into the Healing Wisdom of Plants (on sale April 2014) unfolds as a series of chapters on how plant spirit medicine brings healing to the human spirit. Readers will learn from a wealth of stories and teachings how plant spirits can directly communicate with and aid us, including:
·       A traditional five-element view of healing
·       Receiving guidance from plants
·       Questionnaires to assess our own relationships to the sources of well-being
·       New chapters on community and on such controversial sacred plants as peyote, ayahuasca, marijuana and tobacco
·       Additional interviews with plant shamans of many traditions
Whether we live in a mountain cabin or a city loft, the gifts of the plant spirits present themselves everywhere. Plant Spirit Medicine opens our eyes and hearts to nourish this deepest of natural bonds.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
In 1986 the American healer, Eliot Cowan, discovered the power of plant spirits to heal the human spirit.  He has been practicing and teaching Plant Spirit Medicine ever since.  His book, first published in 1995, re-introduced this neglected ancient practice to the Western world, and the current edition of Plant Spirit Medicine is enriched with perspectives he gained as an initiated elder shaman in the indigenous Huichol tradition of Mexico.

Mr. Cowan is also the founder of an important home for ancient wisdom teachings – the Blue Deer Center in the Catskill Mountains of New York.

For almost forty years, Eliot’s teachings, healings, writings, ceremonial work and community service have changed the lives of thousands of people in many countries.

What People are Saying About Plant Spirit Medicine
“Cowan has charted the territory for a medicine of the past and the future and restores one of the vital links for this to happen—which is the healing power behind our relationship with the plant world. This book is an excellent addition to the alternative medicine collections.”
—Malidoma Somé, author of Ritual: Power, Healing and Community and Of Water and the Spirit: Ritual, Magic and Initiation in the Life of an African Shaman
